# Scorecard Tier Groups

Classify Scorecard scores using tiers that match your organization's maturity, compliance, or readiness model

A Scorecard produces a score between 0 and 100 for every catalog entity it evaluates. However, that number does not tell a user whether the entity is in good shape. A tier group turns the score into a label your organization already understands, such as:

* **Bronze/Silver/Gold**
* **Level 1** through **Level 5**
* **Non-Compliant** through **Fully Compliant**.

![](https://1305598861-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F1bzrz9ybUGCcYdvS4u0z%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-029eb4825787b33d31ed3ad20433297032f282d2%2Fclass-explained.gif?alt=media)

You can reuse tier groups across Scorecards, and every developer sees the same labels in the Catalog. Tier groups do not change how a score is calculated. Checks still return **Pass** or **Fail**, and the Scorecard still produces a 0 to 100 score. The tier group is applied after the score is computed.

**Feature Flag**

Scorecard tier groups are behind the **`IDP_SCORECARD_TIERS`** feature flag. Contact [Harness Support](https://support.harness.io) to enable it on your account.

## Default tier group

Every account starts with a tier group named **Default Tier Group**. It contains three tiers:

| Tier | Score range | What it indicates |
| ------------ | ----------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Critical** | 0 to 49 | Score is below recommended standards and needs immediate attention. |
| **Warning** | 50 to 74 | Score partially meets recommended standards and needs improvement. |
| **Healthy**  | 75 to 100   | Score meets or exceeds recommended standards.                       |

![](https://1305598861-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F1bzrz9ybUGCcYdvS4u0z%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-c74def011c3bb9c9ad7945ccfe07692982fb3ac2%2Fdefault-tier-group.png?alt=media)

{% hint style="info" %}
**Points to Remember**

* **Existing scorecards are auto-attached to the default tier group** - When the feature is enabled on your account, every Scorecard that already exists is assigned the Default Tier Group, so scoring and classification continue without any action from you.
* **It is editable too** - Rename the tiers, change the ranges, change the colors, or add more tiers. If the default bands already meet your organization's expectations, editing the default group is faster than creating a new one. Note that you cannot delete the Default Tier Group.

## Create a tier group

{% hint style="info" %}
You can create tier groups only at the **Account** scope and any Scorecard in that account can use them.
{% endhint %}

1. In IDP, go to **Configure** → **Scorecards** and open the **Tier Groups** tab.

   ![](https://1305598861-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F1bzrz9ybUGCcYdvS4u0z%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-5e5dea88e33bc54d930e14b6e6800fdc89fd8a4e%2Ftier-group.png?alt=media)
2. Click **Create New Tier Group**.
3. Under **Tier Group Details**, enter a **Name**. Optionally add a **Description** explaining what the tier group measures.
4. Under **Tier Configuration**, click **Create tier** to add your first tier.

   ![](https://1305598861-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F1bzrz9ybUGCcYdvS4u0z%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-705a4b5be3ba6265e626737c1bed4ea8b923cd14%2Fcreate-tier-group-empty.png?alt=media)
5. Fill in the tier fields:

   | Field                | Required | Description                                                                                                                                                           |
   | -------------------- | -------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
   | **Tier icon** | Required | Upload an icon that should be shown over the Scorecard card in entity details page. Use the pencil icon to replace an icon and the delete icon to remove it. |
   | **Tier color** | Required | The color used for this tier wherever it appears in the Catalog and in the Scorecard views. Pick a color that stays readable against both light and dark backgrounds. |
   | **Tier name** | Required | A short, recognizable label, for example `Gold` or `Level 3`. Tier names must be unique within the group. |
   | **Tier description** | Optional | What this tier represents. This text helps developers understand what the label means and what to do next. |
   | **Minimum score** | Required | The lowest score that maps to this tier. |
   | **Maximum score** | Required | The highest score that maps to this tier. |
6. Click **+ Add tier** to save the current tier.

   ![](https://1305598861-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F1bzrz9ybUGCcYdvS4u0z%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-eb1d1d53587485bbbc9506ad9d5d3524768842e6%2Fcreate-tier-group-add-tier.png?alt=media)
7. Click **+ Create New tier** to include more tiers within the tier group till the whole coverage is in 0 to 100 range.
8. Click **Create tier group**. The new group appears on the **Tier Groups** tab and is immediately available to any Scorecard in the account.

### Tier configuration rules

Harness validates the whole tier group when you save it. A tier group must satisfy all of the following:

| Rule                                   | Details                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   |
| -------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **At least two tiers** | A single tier would classify every score identically. |
| **No more than `{{MAX_TIERS}}` tiers** | For example, a group with 3 or 5 tiers is valid; a group with more than `{{MAX_TIERS}}` tiers is rejected. |
| **Full coverage of 0 to 100** | Every possible score must fall into exactly one tier, so the ranges must start at 0 and end at 100 with no gaps. However, you may also keep ranges that are not equal in width. A group with tiers at `0 to 4`, `5 to 14`, `15 to 24`, and `25 to 100` is also valid as long as the bands are contiguous. |
| **No overlapping ranges** | Two tiers cannot both claim the same score. |
| **Whole numbers only** | Decimal values are not accepted in **Minimum score** or **Maximum score**. |
| **Unique tier names within the group** | For example, a group with Bronze, Silver, and Gold is valid; two tiers both named Gold are rejected. |

## Assign a tier group to a Scorecard

**Tier Group** is a mandatory field when you create or edit a Scorecard.

1. Go to **Configure** → **Scorecards** and click **Create New Scorecard**, or open an existing Scorecard and click **Edit**.
2. In the **Filter catalog entities for which the scorecard is evaluated** panel, open the **Tier Group** dropdown and select a group. The dropdown lists the Default Tier Group along with every custom group in the account.
3. Finish configuring the Scorecard and then click **Publish Scorecard**, or **Update** if you are editing an existing one.

![](https://1305598861-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F1bzrz9ybUGCcYdvS4u0z%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-8a9a83f31b183f0767ad70fa7f36051789be00f6%2Fscorecard-select-tier-group.png?alt=media)

For the full Scorecard creation flow, go to [Create Scorecards](/internal-developer-portal/use-idp/scorecards/create-scorecards/create-scorecard.md).

## View tiers in the Catalog

Once a Scorecard has a tier group, developers see the tier on the entity page.

1. Open an entity in the **Catalog**.
2. Go to the **Scorecard** tab.
3. The score ring displays the entity's current score, with the tier name and tier color underneath it.
4. Click the **Tier** tab next to **Checks** and **Progress** to see every tier in the group and the score range that maps to it.

![](https://1305598861-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F1bzrz9ybUGCcYdvS4u0z%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-f7ce8b793b930ad4cb4f05ecef14ea294fe3794e%2Fsilver-tier.gif?alt=media)

![](https://1305598861-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F1bzrz9ybUGCcYdvS4u0z%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-dacec63f3943e8e703c6ac1c322d6ea171c37824%2Fgold-tier.gif?alt=media)

The **Tier** tab informs you what a score alone cannot. It also tells you what the current label means, and how far the entity is from the next level.

***

## Edit a tier group

To edit a tier group, complete the following steps:

1. Go to **Configure** → **Scorecards** → **Tier Groups**.
2. On the tier group card, click **Edit**.
3. Change the group name or description, edit any tier, click **+ Create New tier** to append a tier, or click **Remove tier** to delete one.
4. Click **Update tier group**.

As the tier is recorded with each score, changing a Scorecard's tier group later does not reclassify scores that were already computed. Only future evaluations use the new tier group.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Tier groups are not versioned. When you edit a group, the change propagates to all Scorecards that reference it. If a tier definition is specific to one Scorecard, create a separate tier group for it rather than editing a shared one.
{% endhint %}

***

## Delete a tier group

To delete a tier group, complete the following steps:

1. Go to **Configure** → **Scorecards** → **Tier Groups**.
2. On the tier group card, click the delete icon.

You cannot delete a tier group while a Scorecard still references it. Reassign those Scorecards to a different tier group first. You also cannot delete the Default Tier Group.

***

## Permissions

Tier groups reuse the existing **Scorecards** RBAC resource. Anyone who can create or edit a Scorecard can create, edit, and delete tier groups. Anyone who can view a Scorecard can see its tier group. There is no separate tier group permission.

Like Scorecards, tier groups are supported only at the **Account** scope. Go to [IDP RBAC](/internal-developer-portal/admin-and-customization/rbac/rbac.md) to configure access.
