Overview

Learn how the Workflow Library lets you install pre-built, production-ready Workflows into your Harness IDP account without building them from scratch.

Before your developers can scaffold a service, provision a database, or roll back a release, someone on your platform team has to author the Workflow YAML, build the backing pipeline, and wire up every connector and secret it depends on.

The Workflow Library removes that first build. It is a catalog of out-of-the-box Workflows, authored and maintained by Harness, that you can browse inside IDP and install into your own account in a few clicks. Each library item ships as a Workflow paired with the backing pipelines it needs, so an installed Workflow is ready for developers to run as soon as you finish the install wizard.

Where to find the library

Go to Workflows in the left navigation, then select the Library tab. The Workflows page has three tabs:

Tab
What it shows

Workflows

The Workflows that already exist in your account, including everything you have installed from the library.

Library

Execution History

Past runs of your Workflows.

How installing works

This works on a clone-and-own model. When you install a library item, Harness IDP does the following:

  1. Creates the backing pipeline, or pipelines, in the Harness project you choose.

  2. Substitutes the connector, secret, and other values you supply into that pipeline configuration.

  3. Creates the Workflow in the IDP scope you choose, already pointed at the pipelines it just created.

  4. Registers the Workflow in the IDP catalog, where it appears alongside your other catalog entities.

Installing is a single API call and completes in a few seconds. From that moment, the installed copy belongs to you. You can rename it, add parameters, swap connectors, restructure the developer-facing form, or rewrite the backing pipeline. Harness can continue to improve the library template afterwards, and your installed copy is unaffected by those changes. Nothing in your account references the library item after install completes.

Because installed Workflows are ordinary IDP Workflows, everything documented in Understanding Workflow YAML and Configuring Workflow Inputs applies to them.

Categories

The library groups items by category so you can navigate to the right Workflow for the task in front of you. Select a category on the left of the Library tab to filter the catalog, or select All Library to see every item.
